Class 11 Maths is the single most important foundation subject if you’re heading toward Science or Commerce with Maths, or preparing for JEE, CUET, or any engineering entrance exam. This guide breaks down all 14 chapters of the NCERT Class 11 Maths textbook — what each one actually covers, why it matters beyond the board exam, and where to get the genuine official PDF.
NCERT Class 11 Maths — Chapter-Wise Overview
1. Sets: Introduces the language of sets — types, representation, operations like union and intersection. Small chapter, but the notation here is used silently in almost every later chapter, including Relations and Functions.
2. Relations and Functions: Builds directly on Sets. Covers ordered pairs, domain/range, and different types of functions. This is the conceptual base for calculus later in the year and in Class 12.
3. Trigonometric Functions: Goes beyond the basic ratios learned in Class 10 — covers trigonometric identities, general solutions of equations, and graphs. One of the highest-weightage chapters for both boards and JEE.
4. Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations: Introduces imaginary numbers and the algebra of complex numbers, then extends quadratic equations to complex roots. Frequently tested in JEE Main.
5. Linear Inequalities: Covers solving and graphing inequalities in one and two variables. Shorter chapter, moderate weightage, but concepts reappear in Linear Programming in Class 12.
6. Permutations and Combinations: Counting principles, factorial notation, and the difference between permutations and combinations. A chapter students often find conceptually tricky — worth extra practice time.
7. Binomial Theorem: Expansion of (a+b)ⁿ, general and middle terms. Builds directly on Permutations and Combinations from the previous chapter.
8. Sequences and Series: Arithmetic and geometric progressions, sums, and means. High-weightage chapter that reappears in various forms across competitive exams.
9. Straight Lines: The first chapter of coordinate geometry — slope, different forms of a line’s equation, distance formulas.
10. Conic Sections: Circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas. Builds on Straight Lines and is a favourite in JEE for combining algebra with geometry.
11. Introduction to Three-Dimensional Geometry: Extends coordinate geometry from 2D to 3D — coordinates, distance, and section formulas in space.
12. Limits and Derivatives: The first real introduction to calculus. This chapter alone sets up nearly everything in Class 12 Maths — do not rush through it.
13. Statistics: Measures of dispersion — range, mean deviation, variance, and standard deviation. Different from the Class 10 statistics chapter in depth.
14. Probability: Classical probability, events, and axiomatic approach. Pairs conceptually with Permutations and Combinations.
Which Chapters Matter Most for JEE and Board Exams
Not all 14 chapters carry equal weight. Based on how these topics reappear across Class 12 and entrance exams, the ones worth extra attention are: Trigonometric Functions, Sequences and Series, Limits and Derivatives, Conic Sections, and Permutations and Combinations. These aren’t “skip the rest” chapters — every chapter is tested — but if you’re short on revision time, start here.
Why This Book Instead of Jumping Straight to Reference Books
NCERT Maths is written to build concepts in a strict logical order — each chapter genuinely depends on the one before it (Sets → Relations and Functions → Trigonometric Functions is a direct chain, for example). Reference books assume you already have this foundation and jump straight to problem variety. Skipping NCERT and starting with a reference book is one of the most common reasons students find Class 11 Maths harder than it needs to be.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NCERT Class 11 Maths enough for JEE Main preparation?
It’s the necessary foundation but not sufficient on its own. Almost every JEE topic traces back to an NCERT chapter, but JEE-level problems need additional practice beyond NCERT’s exercises.
How many chapters are there in NCERT Class 11 Maths?
14 chapters in the current 2025–26/2026–27 edition, covering algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, statistics, and probability.
Which chapter should I start with if I’m behind schedule?
Sets and Relations and Functions first — nearly every later chapter assumes you’re comfortable with this notation. Skipping ahead without them makes everything harder to follow.
Is Class 11 Maths harder than Class 10 Maths?
Most students find it a step up because of new topics like calculus (Limits and Derivatives) and complex numbers, which have no Class 10 equivalent. Consistent daily practice, rather than last-minute cramming, matters more here than it did in Class 10.
Do I need to memorise formulas separately, or does NCERT cover this?
NCERT introduces every formula with a derivation, not just a final result. Understanding the derivation makes the formula far easier to recall under exam pressure than rote memorisation.
